Throughout history, religion has been a pivotal turning point and a significant factor that dictates the ways of life. Greek mythology is no different in this regard; which entail stories that concern and detail the origin and nature of the world. The origins and significance of shedding light on the religious and political institutions of ancient Greece showcase how deeply rooted the desire to enlist in the aid and placate the anger of the gods. Don’t waste time! Our writers will create an original "A Journey Of Odysseus" essay for you Create order In an Analysis of The Odyssey, we follow the unchronological/multiperspective following the return of Odysseus to his homeland of Ithaca, where he will defeat inhospitable suitors camped in his palace and reunite with his loyal wife, Penelope. As we analyze the Odysseus, we come to realize that the story is a showcase of a form of a rebirth of the mind and body. Before diving into the breakdown and character analysis of Odysseus, we must dive into the understanding of Greek culture and mythology so that we may begin to understand the mindset and reasoning behind specific choices between the characters. In Greek culture and society, their belief system and ideology followed them into every aspect into every form of their daily life. In Greek culture and society, it was ones duty to constantly find ways to advance and enhance oneself mentally and physically. When men were not training in the military or conversing in political discussions or debates; they often went to the theatre for entertainment. It was very common for men to watch a wide variety of themes, ranging from dramas, tragedies, and comedies. These often involved the portrayal of current politics and gods-like elements in some form. Now that weve allowed ourselves to formulate an understanding of Greek ideology, we can understand and focus on Odysseus and his journey to return home to Ithaca; folljourneyowing the twists and turns that will continuously set him back. As a man and legend, Odysseus is known as the man who defeated the Trojan War with his mind alone. Develop the image of a man who meticulous and sagacious, an individual who values knowledge above all else and views his mind as his muscle and means to advance against others. Odysseus is one of the most influential Greek champions during the Trojan War. When regarding Odysseus, he is frequently viewed as a man of means, a voice of reason, renowned for his self-restraint and diplomatic skills. He not only is Odysseus considered to be ingenious due to his concept of the Trojan Horse, but he is regarded as an eloquent speaker, a skill that perhaps is best demonstrated in the embassy to Achilles in book 9 of the Iliad. Where the two are often opposed in p ractice since they have many duels and run-ins. The book picks up on the events that take place shortly after the Trojan War, where Odysseus earns the wrath of the gods due to forgetting to leave offerings/blessings to the Gods in order to seek safe passage on his return to Ithaca. Odysseus is stranded on the remote island called Ogygia with a goddess named Calypso, who has fallen in love with him and refuses to let him leave. He remains with Calypso on the island for eight years trapped in an erotic affair, where we gradually reduce himself to a mere slab of meat. At this moment we can no longer recognize the man that was previously described as ingenious and meticulous; he is reduced to basic animalistic instinct. We can ask ourselves how he came to be in this position and the answer isnt far behind. When the gods finally decide that Odysseus may return home to Ithaca, he is alone; his crew and the other boats in his force all laid destroyed from his journeys. And despite Calypsos displeasure and unwillingness to let Odysseus go ; she helps him build a new boat and stocks it with provisions from her island, allowing him to leave. Despite being allowed to leave, once he sets foot off the Island; Poseidon stirs up a storm, which nearly drowns Odysseus. Odysseus prays is was spare his life, and his body finds itself safely washed ashore on yet another island. Odysseus wakes in the forest and encounters Phaeacian princess Nausicaa. At this moment he is naked and bare, and this is the moment where he must humbly yet witty pleads for their assistance, and never reveal his identity. Its a very significant moment due to the fact that this is the first time in a very long time that Odysseus must his true muscle, his mind. For the past several years hes been using his physical muscle to fulfill the willful sexcapades of a lustful goddess Calypso, not having to put much effort into any form of thought. Not only did Odysseus have to find a way to beseech princess Nausicaa, but he also had to use his mind to meticulously plan out how he would address and approach her in a manner in which was befitting her station. As weve previously explained, Odysseus is a very calculated and meticulous individual; and this moment is where he beings to truly showcase and shine that skill set that he has been unable for so long. In Odysseus former glory, he was very cunning and deliberative. When faced with Nausicaa, the weight of every decision pains him; he becomes undecided and torn between whether to try landing against the rocky coast of Scheria; whether to rest by the river or in the shelter of the woods; or whether to embrace Nausicaas knees (the customary gesture of supplication) or address her from afar. The measure and calculation of approach showcase that these instances demonstrate balances Odysseuss warrior mentality. Despite his aggressive and determined viewpoints, he is far from irrational. Instead, the characteristics he begins to demonstrate can be seen as shrewd, cautious, and extremely self-confident. In order to gain further aid to return to his homeland, Odysseus must conduct himself as a man. Something that he had forgotten to do while he was with Calypso. After he manages to disguise himself with appropriate attire; Princess Nausicaa and Odysseus venture inland. As soon as he sees the queen, he throws himself at her feet ( As is the custom, when an individual requires help; they must throw themselves at the feet of the lady of the household). At first, the king almost mistakes Odysseus for a god, due to the nature that they had received him without revealing his identity, Odysseus puts the kings suspicions to rest by declaring that he is a mere mortal. The irony in this and that Odysseus impresses the King so much that he then offers Odysseus his daughters hand in marriage. As Odysseus reminisces on the journey that led him to the point where he was at, sitting before the King, Queen, and court of Phaeacian. Odysseus retells the stories of his adventures and journey; conveniently leaving out specific details that showcased his poor judgment and downfall of his most precious muscle; that being his mind. In one of his stories that take place shortly after the Trojan war, he recalls how his men advise him to snatch some of the food and hurry off, but, to his and his crews detriment, he decides to linger. The caves inhabitant soon returns and it is revealed to be the Cyclops Polyphemus, the son of Poseidon. In this retelling we see how Odysseus begins to lose himself after cleverly tricking and blinding Polyphemus; he decides to without his name which protects him from Poseidons wrath. Despite having secured himself a safe way to escape, out of Odysseus own hubris and the begin of his own downfall; he unnecessarily begins taunting Polyphemus which results i n him mistakenly giving his name. After Odysseuss eventual revelation of his identity to Polyphemus; an avoidable error in judgment proves to be beyond foolish, and showcases a lack of foresight. A clear contrast to the cunning prudence that Odysseus had displayed moments prior when executing his plan to escape from the cave.

However, the persistent gravitation he feels to pursue acting leads him to do just that. As seen later in the movie, Neil would rather die than be denied the right to live the life he has dreamed for himself. My concept of Modernism in Literature

My concept of Modernism in Literature ÂÆ'‚‚ ÂÆ'‚‚ ÂÆ'‚‚ ÂÆ'‚‚ ÂÆ'‚‚ ÂÆ'‚‚ ÂÆ'‚‚ ÂÆ'‚‚ The movement known as "Modernism" began in the first decade of the 20th century and was a reaction against all aspects of Victorianism. Literary interest shifted from the external to the internal, to the psychology and motivation of characters and their roots in deeply shared experience, influenced by the theories of Sigmund Freud and Carl Gustaw Jung. Joseph Conrad, D. H. Lawrence, E. M. Forster among others, explored mind and feeling in fiction still largely conventional in narrative and dialogue. Virginia Woolf and James Joyce, however, experimented with the "stream of consciousness" to express a character's thoughts more directly. Poetry broke even more with the past, replacing traditional prosody with "free verse" and favoring the shorter poem with sharp, concrete imagery. This period was marked by a more colloquial and relaxed use of language. New styles allow ed the reader a more open and less directed approach to the text. Scenes and topics once banned from literature were now.Admitted, with taboo words appearing in print and a more explicit presentation of sexuality and human differences. What is more, the 20th century is above all, in art and in literature, the century of the individual. Main concern of the comparatively new science of psychology is personality. The psychology of personality development describes an evolution within the lifetime of a person. A whole series of tensions are created between the "known" and the new, the static and the dynamic. The tension between the idea of freedom and the idea of responsibility. Culture and personality interact, and help shape and explain each other. In Modernism, there is reflected the modern view of man, an understanding of his motives, of the forces, which shape him, and of the values, images and meanings, which are both his interpretations of experience and the shapers of his...

THE ROLE OF IMPLIED TERMS IN SALE OF GOODS CONTRACTS Essay

THE ROLE OF IMPLIED TERMS IN SALE OF GOODS CONTRACTS - Essay Example Section 12 of the Sale of Goods Act 1979 protects the interests of buyers if the seller does not have a clear title in the goods. Section 13 of the Sale of Goods Act 1979 states that goods sold by description must conform to their original description, under which they had been sold. Section 14 of the Sale of Goods Act 1979 requires that the goods sold must be of satisfactory quality (Sale of Goods Act 1979). As such, title in goods, in the context of the right to sell, is the province of section 12 of the Sale of Goods Act 1979. Every sale of goods contract incorporates an implied term, namely that the right is vested with the seller, at the time when the property is to be transferred from the seller to the buyer. This right exists, only if the goods do not belong to some other person or the rights of some other person are not violated by such sale. Under the provisions of the SGA 1979, a breach of condition would be tantamount to a total failure of consideration. This condition applies even if the goods sold had been put to use (Stone 215). Section 13 of the Sale of Goods Act 1979 includes an implied term in to the sale of goods contract, according to which a buyer can reject the goods supplied, if they had not been correctly described. This right exists only when the buyer relies on the description of the goods by the seller. (Sale of Goods Act 1979). Under this implied term, goods must correspond to their original description, in sale of goods by description, contracts. The Sale of Goods Act 1979 makes it mandatory for the goods supplied to be free from any defect. Moreover, the goods must be fit for the purpose of the buyer for which the latter had purchased them. However, it must be established that the seller had knowledge about the purpose for which the goods had been bought. It is sufficient, if the buyer can establish that seller believed or knew that he was making a deceptive

A Catholic Life Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

A Catholic Life - Essay Example This can be considered as heady years when anything was deemed possible. His schooling was marked by periods of hardship and deprivation. This was clearly in his case a time of intense personal trials as he went to college as a working student to support his studies. There was a time he suffered some form of bullying by his richer classmates and they made fun of his â€Å"nice clothes† which greatly embarrassed him. While still a small boy, he had a different concept of God who is strict and very demanding in terms of penance. But he had taken comfort that he belonged to the most important royal family – that of the Catholics (Wilkes 21). He even aspired to sainthood in the innocence of his childhood (ibid. 23). His high school years saw him earn decent grades since he seemed to have the gifts of an intellectual who can breeze through school without much effort. His faith in his religion is not to be tested yet since he lived sort of a secure life, surrounded by the fam iliar and not yet exposed to the outside world in which new and even rebellious ideas are in ferment. Changes started to occur in his personal life and consequently in his views and outlook in life during the time he started his college days. It was a period of great financial difficulties. Catholicism as a religion emphasizes both suffering and deprivation as a noble act (ibid. 26) and further ingrained with a dictum of living a life for others. Whether intentional or not, this constant barrage of feeling guilty ends up making some people a bit neurotic as in the case of Paul Wilkes. Despite his professional success, his search for God soon brought him to the extreme decision to follow the way of Christ and abandon all his material belongings. Paul’s... A Catholic Life Every person goes through life's incredible journey in his or her own unique ways. It is sometimes called in religious philosophy as the â€Å"process of becoming† for which nobody can know how the end will come about. No one can likewise anticipate the high and low points in this journey of a lifetime. This was what the author Paul Wilkes underwent during challenging times in his life and career. Every person also feels a bit empty, at some point in their lives. In his case, Mr. Wilkes suffered what is called a mid-life crisis so early in his married life when he was still in his mid-thirties, when other people suffer the same crisis at a much later age. A person is shaped by both his environment and by his basic temperament. Mr. Wilkes can be considered as just like any other person, an average person with the usual dreams and ambitions in life. What was a bit different about him was his tenacity in the face of adversity. This was amply demonstrated in his being the runt of the litter, growing up in a poor home, a constant struggle while in school (from elementary up to his college days) and achieved some measure of professional success. If we really contemplate on the real purpose of life, either we go off the edge or end up finding something really meaningful. Some call this process as a catharsis or a conversion, or as an epiphany of sorts like what Saul of Tarsius experienced while he was on his way.

How Egypt became a Secular Nationalist type state Essay Example for Free

How Egypt became a Secular Nationalist type state Essay Egypt and Iran are the two Middle Eastern states with different Ideologies. The two states have a long history in the past. Despite the fact that both are Muslim dominated states, both have a totally different international stature in terms of their ideologies. Egypt has a secular nationalist stature where as Iran has a radical Islamist stature. The major reasons behind this divergent stature are the social setups, various movements, the historical developments and the impact of important national leaders. Egypt Egypt is located in the northeastern corner of Africa. Egypt used to be the home of one of the principal civilizations of the ancient Middle East and one of the worlds earliest urban and literate societies. Pharaonic Egypt remained under rule of various dynasties for a period of about 3000 years which were interspersed with brief periods of foreign rule. It was conquered by Arab Muslim armies in AD 639–642. Since then, Egypt has been part of Islamic world. Though it was ruled by foreigners but the countrys culture remained Arab in its very nature. The most notable of Egypts rulers under the Muslim caliphate was Saladin (Salah ad-Din, 1138–93), sultan of Egypt and Syria and founder of the Ayyubid dynasty. In 1517 the Ottoman Empire defeated the Mamluks and established control over Egypt up to 1798, when Napoleon occupied the country. Due to its strategic location, Egypt always remained a hub for trade routes between Africa, Europe, and Asia, especially due to opening of the Suez Canal in 1869, connecting the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea. The concern of the European powers over the canal for strategic and commercial reasons became ruling factor in subsequent history of Egypt. The U. K occupied Egypt in 1882 and continued to exert a strong influence on the country until after World War II (1939–45). One of major elements in political history was Hasan al-Banna, the founder of (Ikhwan), The Muslim Brotherhood in 1928 which established more than fifty branches in Egypt by 1934. This organization opposed the secular policies and believed that Muslim nations should govern according to the principles of the Quran. The organization had a major impact on the people of Egypt. At the end of World War Two, the Ikhwan had over 5 Lac active workers and around twice as many supporters. The organization sent thousands of fighters in the war against Israel but it was banned by the government of Noqrashi Pasha. In 1952 a military coup installed a revolutionary regime under the leadership of Gamal Abdel Nasser that promoted a combination of socialism and Pan-Arab nationalism and hence converted the Egypt from Islamic to Secular nationalist state. His successor as president, Anwar al-Sadat continued Nassers policies with some modifications, especially in relation to Israel and was a key player in the Egypt-Israel Peace Treaty of 1979. Upon Sadats assassination in 1981, Muhammad Hosni Mubarak became president of Egypt who was elected for his fifth term in 2005. Mubarak is following a secular nationalist agenda. Iran The ancient Persian Empire consisted of Iran, Azerbaijan, Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, the eastern part of Turkey, Iraq and the parts of Pakistan. The Muslims invaded Iran in the time of Caliph Umar (637) and conquered it after several great battles. The majority of Iranians gradually converted to Islam. This conversion to Islam was a long process which took almost two centuries. The Muslim population rose from approximately 40% in the mid 9th century to close to 100% by the end of 11th century. Iran was dominated by Sunni Muslims initially however, Ismail I initiated a religious policy to recognize Shia Islam as the official religion of the Safavid Empire, which still is recognized as Shiite state. During World War II, Iran was an important supplier of oil to the Soviet Union. After World War II, Iran kept following western policies and introduced some economical reforms, which did not greatly improve economic conditions and the liberal pro-Western policies alienated some Islamic religious and political groups. In mid-1960s the political situation became increasingly unstable. The Premier Hassan Ali Mansur was assassinated in 1965 and security service, SAVAK, became more active. The Islamic clergy, headed by the Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini (who had been exiled in 1964), were becoming increasingly violent. By late 1974 an alarming increase in inflation occurred resulted into a big gap between the rich and poor. This situation gave birth to Islamic Revolution which transformed Iran from a monarchy under Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, to an Islamic republic under Ayatollah Khomeini, the leader of the revolution and founder of the Islamic Republic in December 1979. Mohammad Reza Pahlavi left the country for exile in January 1979 and on 1 February, 1979 Ayatollah Khomeini returned to Tehran and declared an Islamic republic with a new Constitution reflecting his ideals of Islamic government. Ayatollah Khomeini became supreme spiritual leader of Iran. Same year , Iraq massively invaded Iran, feeling that Iran is too weak to fight back but Iran achieved surprising defensive success resulting a cease fire on 20 August 1988. Since then Iran in following radical Islamic beliefs and has denied to bow before any international pressure against its ideology. Conclusion Iran and Egypt despite being Muslim dominated countries underwent a different course of events which resulted into different ideologies of the countries. Due to policies of government, different neighborhood, different political interactions and active involvement of key leaders, Egypt became a secular nationalist state whereas Iran became a radical Islamic state. Essay example --

Animals are so often forgotten when it comes to the many different levels of basic rights. No, they can’t talk, or get a job, nor can they contribute to society the way humans can. Yet they hold a special place in their owners’ hearts, they can without a doubt feel, show their different emotions, and they can most definitely love. In recent years there has been a massive increase in animal rights awareness, leading to a better understanding and knowledge in the subject of the humane treatment of animals. Where do humans draw the line between the concern of equality, and simple survival? It’s fair to assume there should be disparity between the way cats and cows are treated, or the way chickens and dogs are. Certain animals have their place in the animal kingdom, grazing animals like cows and chickens have historically been used as a food source since the concept of animal husbandry was introduced, on the other end of the spectrum cats and dogs have been domesticated and kept as common house pets. The suggestion that livestock have the same emotions and feelings as a typical housecat can be up to debate. Peter Singer states that the behavior of some apes, dolphins and dogs suggest they have emotions and desires. All of the evidence, or the lack thereof, leads to issues concerning the ethical treatment of all animals. Consumption is one of the biggest areas of disagreement in regards to animal rights. Throughout the world there are many different laws and regulations regarding the treatment of animals. Each country has their own set of standards, many of them religious and others more along the lines of common sense. While it is normal to regularly consume cattle meat (such as cow) in America, many Hindu Indians refrain from it... ... cancer, but don’t rub a new shampoo in their eyes, or feed them dishwashing liquid until they slowly and painfully die. Animals deserve fair and ethical treatment, however not necessarily equally. Non-human animals and humans are not one in the same, there is no way we will ever be defined and put in the same category. Humans have reference levels, the ability to reason and think logically. We have evolved to the point where we can study, contain, and determine the outcome of basically any animal on Earth, now it’s up to us to ensure they are treated fairly. All it takes is one’s voice to start a movement towards finding humane ways to butcher livestock to feed families, to help build a new law that makes shelters safer and cleaner for abandoned animals to live and have a second chance, and to help make popular those companies that don’t condone animal testing.

American Ganster

The film introduces us the life in the Harlem during the 1970s. Denzel Washington plays Frank Lucas and was a typical member of the gangster who prowls the city to kill somebody for a fee. Although he was a ruthless thug he was loved by his people and always had time to take his mother to church. With his cold-blooded and unrelenting character he was hired as the personal driver and right-hand man of Harlem’s drug magnate, Ellsworth â€Å"Bumpy† Johnson. Unknown to him this would lead his life to wealth and then to chaos. For the review, the setting of the movie is perfect and it portrays the real ambiance of the 70s during the time that drugs are rampant and uncontrolled. Director Ridley Scott has indeed perfected this movie to make sure viewers can feel the real surroundings, how the people in Harlem interact and how Frank Lucas and his men ruled over the city. Ridley also properly selected the actors for their role and installed in them the personality that matches th eir role. The movie is believable because it was based on a true story and relays to us the true event and situations during that period. The thesis of this movie can be found in its context. The title itself shows a wider picture of a nation that is disintegrating because of prostitution, illegal gun and drug trade which was rampant during the 6Os and 70s. The significance of the story connects when the US is making war with Vietnam and instigates political influence of President Nixon and his agenda with other countries. Political instability created unsecured connection between nation and this time Vietnam became the source of illegal drug trading and eventually entered the main heart of New York. The Harlem, however, was a place where police cannot penetrate and control because gangsters have been able to arm themselves and repel any force that goes into their territories. The influence of drugs and money has infected the law and New York became inhabited by corrupt police officer s and state officials who are under the payroll of the drug lords. Drugs dictated the status of life and gangsters were ruling everything and everybody. The main theme of this movie is also apparent. Drugs create evil men and evil men create drugs. It is a continuous process and has been a social disease for over a century. What makes drugs to be the roots of evil is the money involve in the trade. Drugs and money always correlate and money can buy and move everything regardless of any political or judicial obstacle. All kinds of crimes emanate from greed of money and money comes from drugs easily. Incidentally, the moral fiber of our law cannot be taken for granted. Somebody out there does not agree with the broken judicial system and will ways to put a stop on this.In this case, Russel Crowe who plays the detective hunts Frank and put him in prison. He plays his role effectively by subjecting Frank to interrogation and strategizes everything to pin him down. Although the illegal tr ade has already infected the police force, it was the incorruptible Crowe who have uprooted the tree that is bearing the fruit. In the end, the good prevails over evil (Scott). Viewers rated this movie with four stars if the basis for the perfect score is five.Accordingly, this movie was like the modern â€Å"Scarface† which story was also based from illegal drug trade, crime and vengeance during the 1930s gangster era. Although the events in this film were not totally different compared to Scarface, the movie also revolve in the subject of illegal trading, crime and corruption. The only difference is the plot of the story which happens in small suburban black area and most of the major stars are also black. Scarface is a fiction but American Gangsters is based from a true story. My own personal view for this film is positively higher than four stars because it caught my interest from the beginning of the story up to its end. It does not compel you to watch the full movie but glued you to the screen absorbing everything that you see. It happens in a real drama and every scene was grippingly awesome and interesting. Denzel Washington, Russel Crowe and the director as well as the people who made this film must be applauded for the job well done. Work Cited American Gangster. 2007. Discrimination in America Essay - 646 Words

Discrimination in America Prejudice is the negative attitude based on false generalizations about members of different racial and ethnic groups. From prejudice, discrimination is born. We all are guilty of discriminating other people, but one can only speculate the factors that bring about this hatred towards one another. Although a single cause cannot account for the presence of racism, factors such as socialization, self-justification, and competition are a few human attributes that lead to acts of racial discrimination. At an early age, children begin the process of socialization. In order for one to be able to communicate with others, it is essential for one to learn to socialize with the people around them. One cause†¦show more content†¦A child’s upbringing lays the foundations for their social skills and the way they interact with other ethnic groups. Another attribute that leads to racial discrimination is the way that people find means to justify their actions by degrading the actions of others. For instance, during the Vietnam War, American soldiers assumed that civilians of small villages were aiding the Vietcong. Based on presumption, the soldiers felt justified to torture the villagers and destroy their homes. â€Å"If we are able to convince ourselves that another group is inferior, immoral, or dangerous, then we can feel justified in discriminating against them, enslaving them, or even killing them†. The American soldiers deemed the torturing of the village people reasonable by convincing themselves that it would help destroy the Vietcong. Self-justification is apparent even in today’s society. Humans are always searching for excuses to justify our actions towards one another. The need to compete for possessions, jobs, and status causes people to feel animosity towards other ethnic groups. For example, during the 1800’s the Chinese occupied many of the jobs building railroads; this made the Anglo-Americans angry, they felt as if the Chinese were taking over the job market. In turn, this led the Chinese to become â€Å"victims of open discrimination and hostility†.
